In 2023, property owners and residents of the area known as “Pill Hill” approached the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) with the idea of designating it a local historic district. The neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, but this only protects property from demolition or change, when there is federal ownership, funding, or permits involved.

The HPC agreed to consider and the City is now working with these individuals to possibly establish a local historic district. This process will include neighborhood engagement with City officials, professional historical research and documentation, and public hearings at HPC and City Council. Ultimately, City Council approval is required to establish a local landmark district.
