A detailed FAQ is below. But for those of you familiar with mobile pay technology, RPT Mobile Fare is easy as 1-2-3.
- Download and install the app, then register using your email address.
- Select and purchase a fare product using a credit or debit card.
- Activate your pass as the bus approaches* and scan the code with the farebox reader as you board.
* NOTE: Once activated, an e-bus pass will expire in 5 minutes. So wait until you see the bus coming to activate.
- Buy and activate fares instantly using electronic payments.
- Purchase and store multiple tickets on your phone for future use.
- Store funds to pay for fares as you go.
- Simplify your boarding. Just scan your ticket at the farebox on fixed-route buses or show your activated ticket to the driver on ZIPS paratransit.
- Plan your trip or get information about route schedules. For real-time bus tracking, please continue to use the DoubleMap app.
Download RPT Mobile Fare for free on Google Play or the iPhone App Store.
Pay for your fare with your phone!
Riders who use ZIPS paratransit service can also pay their fares using the app. Please contact RPT staff if you wish to use RPT Mobile Fare app to pay for paratransit rides before downloading the app.
Activate your bus pass when you need it
You can purchase RPT fares at anytime and store them on your phone. The fares can then be activated as you need them when you’re stepping onto the bus!
Earn a 31-day pass through fare-capping!
The RPT Mobile Fare app has a fare-capping feature that will provide a 31-day pass after you pay for enough individual fares to equal the value of a regular monthly pass ($42) through the pay as you go feature. The 31-day period will then begin from when you first activated the pay as you go pass.
Getting started is easy.
IMPORTANT: Are you eligible for reduced fares or ZIPS? If yes, click here
Everyone else, start with these two steps:
STEP 1) Download the app. Go to the appropriate app store for your phone’s operating system (Apple App Store for iOS or and Google Play for Android).
STEP 2) Create an account. Open the app and tap “Sign Up” then enter in your email address and create a password. You will need to remember your password for completing purchases within the app.
If you are eligible for reduced or special fares or use ZIPS paratransit contact RPT at rpt@rochestermn.gov for help getting set up with an account. Provide your name, email address, and the fare type you are eligible for. Once you’re set up with an account, you’ll receive an email with a link to download the app. You can then follow the steps below starting with Step 2.
Reduced fare types include:
- Youth ages 6-18
- Persons age 65 or over
- ZIPS paratransit card holders
- Persons who use a visible mobility assistance device such as a wheelchair
- Persons with a disability
- Students
STEP 1) Purchase fares in the “My Passes” menu. Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of your phone screen then tap “My Passes” and finally the green “Add Funds” button. You’ll then see a list of fare options.
Click the plus sign next to the pass type you’d like to add the desired number of passes. To add “pay as you go” stored value, ta the “Value to add” button and then type in the amount of funds you’d like to store up to $500. Once you have your fare products entered, tap the green “Continue” button.
STEP 2) Enter your credit or debit card information.
STEP 3) Confirm you purchase information and tap the green “Continue” button.
STEP 1) Go to the “My Passes” menu and select the fare you want to use.
- Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner
- Tap “My Passes”.
- Click the purchased fare product you want to use.
For some fare types, you will have the option of getting a free transfer. Tap “Purchase” on the prompt if you want a transfer. The transfer will then show up in your “My Passes” menu and is good for 90 minutes after you activate your fare.
STEP 2) Activate your pass as you get on the bus.
- Click “Ok” and this will bring you to a screen with a green “Tap Here to Activate Pass” button.
- IMPORTANT: Tap the “Tap Here to Activate Pass” button as you are boarding the bus or as is it pulling up to your stop. If the five-minute countdown expires before you can validate your fare you will not be able to use it.
Passes that last a certain number of days, such as the 31-day pass, will be valid starting the first time you activate of the pass.
STEP 3) Scan your pass at the farebox.
- Place your phone screen with the QR code face down on the farebox scanner (the glass in front of where you insert bills.)
- Tapping the bar code will make it a bit larger.
- If the bar code does not work after a couple tries show your phone to the driver.
For ZIPS paratransit trips simply show the driver the activated pass with the countdown clock.
RPT has provided answers to common questions from app users. If you need additional assistance, please contact us via email at rpt@rochestermn.gov or 507-328-RIDE for further assistance.
I need a receipt. How do I get one?
To request a receipt for a purchase through the app, send an email to rpt@rochestermn.gov with "Receipt request" in the subject line.
I forgot my password, how do I reset it?
Log out of your account if you are currently logged in by tapping the menu icon at the upper left of your phone screen and then tap “Log Out”. Tap the menu icon again, tap “Log In” and then “Forgot password?”
I activated my pass too early, will RPT refund me?
RPT will not provide refunds for passes that were activated and expired before they could be validated.
How can I purchase reduced fares like youth or senior on the app?
Please contact us via email at rpt@rochestermn.gov with your name, email address, and the type of reduced fare you are eligible for.
What is the difference between the RPT Mobile Fare app and DoubleMap?
The RPT Mobile Fare app is for purchasing fares, validating them on RPT buses, and planning your transit trips. The DoubleMap app allows you to track real-time bus location. For now, these functions will remain in separate apps.
Where can I use RPT Mobile Fare app?
You can use fares purchased through the RPT Mobile Fare App on all RPT buses in Rochester, Minnesota including ZIPS paratransit services.
How do I validate my fare?
After activating a ticket, your ticket will display on your screen with a QR code. Please display the ticket you intend to use on your screen.
On fixed-route buses, place your mobile device screen down on the ticket scanner right in front of where you would normally insert bills to pay a fare. An audible “beep” will announce that your ticket is valid for use.
On ZIPS paratransit, show the activated ticket with a counting down clock to the driver.
How does the driver/ know that I have a valid ticket?
Tickets are read by the farebox at the front of the bus. Additionally, drivers can validate mobile tickets visually by checking actively changing countdown clock on the ticket screen if the farebox scanner is not functional.
What types of cards are accepted?
MasterCard/MasterCard Debit, Visa/Visa Debit, Discover and American Express.
What security protections are in place to protect my personal information?
The Mobile Ticketing platform is fully certified and compliant with Payment Card Industry standards (PCI-DSS). All payment communications are fully encrypted, and any sensitive data stored is highly encrypted and systems are constantly monitored for security vulnerabilities.
