Resources for Renters
We believe that obtaining safe shelter is a fundamental human right. We know that having shelter creates the stability needed for people to work productively, for children to learn, and for a community to remain healthy. In addition:
- Quality affordable homes have a positive impact on a community's tax base, livability, and economic stability & vitality of the region.
- Housing and zoning code education and enforcement protect individual and community health, safety, and well-being while also balancing environmental health and preventing community blight.
- A rental license allows the code official to reduce potential hazards of unsafe living conditions to provide for public health, safety, and welfare. By following code guidelines, your home or rental dwelling will meet minimum standards of safety and will be less likely to cause injury to those occupying the property. The City carries some liability in inspecting and issuing a rental license. It ensures that tenants' homes meet minimum requirements since a tenant is unable to make repairs to a home they do not own.
- Rental licenses are required City Ordinance. Renting without a license can put occupants in danger or lead to other costly remedies.
