Rochester Public Library Seed Library Open House 2024

Post Date:02/28/2024 9:06 AM

February 28, 2024 – ROCHESTER, MINN. – The Rochester Public Library seed library officially starts Friday, March 1, with the Seed Library Open House returning for 2024 on Sunday, March 3.

The RPL Seed Library and over 16,000 seed packets return for a sixth season on March 1 this year. The space has also been moved around the 2nd floor of the library and given a full refresh in layout and design.

“We’re excited to assist people once again in learning to plant, grow healthy foods, and save seeds for the next growing season. Over 300 volunteer hours have already gone into making the sixth year of the Seed Library possible. New this season is a collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center to identify and provide a variety of seeds for cancer-fighting foods.” says RPL Head of Technical Services Keri Ostby.

To celebrate the new Seed Library refresh, the Seed Library Open House has been brought back this year. You can learn about the Seed Library, bring home seeds (up to 15 packets per person), and gather information and advice about gardening and healthy foods from a variety of community organizations including:

  • Backyard Bounty Urban Homesteading

  • City of Rochester, Public Works, Environmental Services

  • Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center

  • Olmsted Soil and Water Conservation District

  • Plant a seed.

  • Prairie Smoke MN

  • Rochester Garden & Flower Club

  • The Village Agricultural Cooperative

  • UMN Extension Master Gardeners

  • UMN Extension SNAP-Ed

“The Seed Library Open House offers the opportunity to connect, ask questions, and share your love of plants with these outstanding local organizations. Snacks are being provided by CHOOCHOO-ca-CHEW with recipes based on the Seed Library collection.  We’re so thankful for everyone’s assistance and willingness to share their time and expertise with our community,” mentions Ostby.

The Open House begins at 1:30pm on Sunday, March 3, and runs until 4:00pm in the auditorium and across the library.
