Mayor Kim Norton joined with other mayors across the United States on April 23, 2021 for a briefing with White House officials, to urge the Biden/Harris Administration to move forward with strong efforts to invest federal resources for sustainable, equitable community revitalization. Mayor Norton took a lead role in the briefing, urging the Biden Administration to seek increased funding for Rochester’s recovery sharing gratitude for alignment around climate action, and needing forthcoming guidance from the US Treasury related to federal funding to local governments. The City of Rochester supports additional state and federal funding and policies that will assist in economic recovery and growth for local governments, small businesses, and nonprofits.
Mayor Norton was invited to the meeting as one of the founding leaders of a national coalition, called the Transition Advocacy Project (“TAP”), which has brought together diverse mayors, town leaders, and county officials from across the United States to call for bold and robust federal support for economic recovery, local climate action, community equity and resilience, and sustainable infrastructure investment. See www.StrategiesDC.com/Transition_html. On April 23, Mayor Norton gathered with other mayors from cities ranging from Bozeman, MT to Gretna, LA, among others. These mayors briefed officials in the White House Office of Intergovernmental Relations and the White House Office of Public Engagement.
Mayor Kim Norton shares, “I appreciated having the opportunity to join my peers and advocate for the needs we have here in Rochester. It is important that the Biden/Harris Administration supports the needs of cities across the country. Our needs, especially in regard to transit are important to support the future success of our community.”
Mayor Norton and the other mayors were pleased that the White House officials responded positively to these calls for robust federal investment and asked for follow-up with key federal agency officials to seek to put these ideas into action.
